Tue, 2 December 2008 The American gay community has made a great deal of headway within recent decades, however slow and steady at times, but what shall become of it's identity as it is absorbed into the mainstream? Will the gay community one day no longer being at odds with the majority also mean that the proud efforts of gay activists to secure our rights may go ignored or even become forgotten? While younger gay generations suffer less discrimination from their peers, fewer and fewer of them are aware of Stonewall, Quintin Crisp, Harvey Milk, and so forth. Worse yet, fewer youths of all persuasions seem to recognize the AIDS crisis as it simultaneously becomes passe and secretly common once more. Rights movements seem further toward the front of our minds in the midst of agitation, but what shall be taken for granted as this agitation brings forth positive results, allowing us go back to our then normal lives. With the unification of the mainstream and the gay community (although far away from us) what do we stand to lose or perhaps abandon. Who pushes? Who pulls? When and if the smoke settles, how shall we remember the fire? Hosted by R.J. Jackson on November 2nd at his residence in Dallas, Texas. Recorded with social and political observer Roy Calhoun and writer and podcaster John Selig. Comments[0] |
